Diamond Cut

The Standard in Diamonds have been known as the 4 C’s However here at Tales Remembered we Consider the Cost as being a Factor in your most important decision. Therefore In our opinion we feel that the following reference to Diamonds should be stated as the 5“C”’s o simplify the subject of diamond grading, the 4Cs relate to cut, colour, clarity and carat weight and Cost However,- a universal language that was established with the Gemmological Institute of America (GIA) and introduced to the public by Tales Remembered. The combination of these factors determines a diamond`s relative rarity and value. However, as important as the 4 Cs are in diamond grading reports, they do not express the beauty of a diamond, the most important part of our diamond selection work at Tales Remembered Jewellers. By hand and eye, we focus on the beauty of each and every diamond, because a natural diamond should never be purchased purely on its laboratory grading report. Two diamonds with the same 4Cs may differ greatly in beauty. One may be dull and lifeless, the product of poorly aligned facets and angles, while the other may radiate with Fire, Life and Brilliance.

Understanding Diamond Cut

Diamonds are renowned for their ability to transmit light and sparkle so intensely. We often think of a diamond’s cut as shape (round, heart, oval, marquise, pear), but what diamond cut actually does mean how well a diamond’s facets interact with light. Precise artistry and workmanship are required to fashion a stone so its proportions, symmetry and polish deliver the magnificent return of light only possible in a diamond.Achieving the best cut for a diamond reflects in the stone’s final beauty and value. And of all the diamond 4Cs, it is the most complex and technically difficult to analyze. To determine the cut grade of the standard round brilliant diamond – the shape that dominates the majority of diamond jewelry – GIA calculates the proportions of those facets that influence the diamond’s face-up appearance. These proportions allow GIA to evaluate what the best cut for a diamond is, by studying how successfully a diamond interacts with light to create desirable visual effects, such as:

Internal and external white light reflected from a diamond

The scattering of white light into all the colors of the rainbow

The amount of sparkle a diamond produces, and the pattern of light and dark areas caused by reflections within the diamond. This short video explains the GIA cut scale and how GIA classifies round brilliant cut diamonds with a cut grade ranging from Excellent to Poor by factoring in a range of parameters including the diamond’s proportions, culet size, girdle thickness, polish and symmetry descriptions. GIA’s diamond cut grade also takes into account the design and craftsmanship of the diamond, including its weight relative to its diameter, its girdle thickness (which affects its durability), the symmetry of its facet arrangement, and the quality of polish on those facets. The GIA Diamond Cut Scale for standard round brilliant diamonds in the D-to-Z diamond color range contains 5 grades ranging from Excellent to Poor and is the definitive scale for classifying diamond cuts.
